Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan (WE) was established as a non-profit membership organization in 1995 to help women in businesses. Although one-third of provincial businesses are owned and operated by women, the large membership of WE - 650 members - suggests the importance of assistance. WE is funded by Western Economic Diversification Canada and is part of the Women's Enterprise Initiative network, which assists women across western Canada. WE's head office is in Saskatoon, with a branch in Regina.
Since its inception, WE has sought to eliminate the barriers that confront women entrepreneurs. It seeks to help women (urban and rural) who want to start or purchase a business, or expand an existing business. Crucial financial assistance is provided through a loan program to businesses that are majority-owned and operated by women. Business advisors provide essential information. Training workshops are offered in a variety of formats, including face-to-face training and distance learning. WE also provides opportunities for women to network and assist other women, through mentoring programs, member events, and an annual Business Symposium. Besides providing assistance to women, WE offers youth programs, whose target is elementary and high school students, with an aim to increase youth's awareness of entrepreneurship as a career option.
