Sherman, Marion (ca. 1909-88)

Born about 1909 in Ontario, Sherman was a home economics graduate of the Macdonald Institute and the University of Toronto. Moving to Saskatchewan in 1930, she became a dietician in Saskatoon. In 1938 she married Pete Sherman; they moved to Regina, then settled in Prince Albert in 1942. In 1946 Sherman worked with the Regional Libraries supervisor to establish the North Central Saskatchewan Regional Library, the first regional library on the Prairies. She became board chair when the library opened in Prince Albert (1950), and served until 1984. In 1962 Premier W.S. Lloyd and Sherman opened new regional headquarters. She also served as a city councillor from 1949 to 1982, helped organize the Prince Albert Health Region, and worked for senior citizens’ facilities, subsidized housing, and the establishment of a community service centre. After retirement, the Marion Sherman Bursary for Children’s Librarians was created in her honour. Awards included Prince Albert Citizen of the Year (1960), Saskatchewan Library Trustees’ Association Honorary Life Membership (1975), and membership in the Order of Canada (1978). Marion Sherman died on April 23, 1988, in Prince Albert.
