Sedgwick, Raymond (1914-97)

Raymond Edward “Buff” Sedgwick was born at Elrose, Saskatchewan on March 16, 1914. He worked in the trucking industry prior to joining the army; after his discharge in 1946 he returned to Saskatchewan, working for the Intercontinental plant in Saskatoon. Sedgwick became shop steward and vice-president of his local, the United Packing House Workers. He served as president of the Saskatoon and District Labour Council, and as a vice-president on the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour (SFL) executive council. Sedgwick was a political activist, deeply involved in provincial, federal and civic politics. He was a founding board member of the Saskatoon Community Clinic. He worked as a representative with the Canadian Labour Congress for more than twenty years, retiring in 1979. He died on November 3, 1997. In his memory the SFL established the Ray Sedgwick Scholarship of up to $6,000 for the successful applicant to the Labour College of Canada Residential Program.
