McIntyre, David L. (1950-)

Composer, pianist and teacher David Leroy McIntyre was born on September 11, 1950, in Edmonton, Alberta. In 1969, having completed his associate diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto, he went on to study piano and composition at the University of Calgary, where he graduated with distinction in 1973. He continued his education at the University of Southern Mississippi, earning a master's degree in music composition in 1975. During this time, he spent his summers studying at the Banff Centre. From 1976 until 1995, McIntyre taught music at the Canadian Bible College in Regina, as well as at the University of Regina for a number of years. He became an Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre in 1989, and in 1993 helped to found the Prairie New Music Festival. From 2000 to 2003, he served as Composer-in-Residence with the Regina Symphony Orchestra, creating a number of new orchestral works. Since 1998, McIntyre has been conductor of the Prairie Pride Chorus. Over the years, he has published a variety of works for piano, flute, organ, brass, voice, and choir; and many singers, instrumentalists and organizations have commissioned works from him. Butterflies & Bobcats for piano was the commissioned work for the 2004 Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition. McIntyre performs as pianist with the trio Contrasts, and can often be heard on CBC radio.
