Louis Horlick was born in Montreal on December 2, 1921. He obtained his MD and much of his post-graduate training at McGill University. His renowned career as an atherosclerosis researcher began at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. In 1954, he moved to Saskatchewan as the first fully trained subspecialty cardiologist at the new degree-granting medical school. He quickly established an outstanding reputation as a bedside clinical cardiologist and researcher with exceptional sensitivity to the needs of the whole person. From 1968 to 1975 he was chairman of the Department of Medicine. After formal retirement in 1989, he became enthusiastically involved in the field of geriatric medicine and continued to practice until 2000. He has published numerous medical articles, plus two books on the history of the University of Saskatchewan Medical School. He received the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 1991 and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1994. He and his wife Ruth are also well known in Saskatoon as loyal patrons of the arts.
