Embury, John Fletcher Leopold (1875-1944)

Brigadier General J.F.L. Embury, CB, CMG, VD, was born on November 10, 1875, in Thomasburg, Ontario. He completed his law studies at the University of Toronto's Osgoode Hall in 1902, and the following year moved to Regina, where he established a thriving practice and was appointed King's Counsel in 1913. He was also a militia officer in the Regina Company of the 95th (Saskatchewan) Rifles. On its mobilization, Embury was appointed commanding officer the 28th (North-West) Battalion, CEF. The Battalion embarked overseas to Britain in 1915, and then to France as part of 2nd Canadian Division. Embury was wounded in September 1916. After a period of convalescence, he returned to active duty in January 1917 and was appointed commander of 2nd Canadian Brigade. He finished the war as a brigadier general, commanding the Canadian section at British General Headquarters, where in 1918 he oversaw the demobilization of all Canadian troops in France. Returning from overseas in 1918, Embury was appointed a judge of the Saskatchewan Court of King's Bench, He continued in that appointment in Regina until his sudden death from pneumonia on August 13, 1944. At his death, Embury was the senior officer in charge of military registration in Regina, and chairman of the National War Services Board.
