A respected and progressive public servant, the Honourable Sidney L. Buckwold was born in Winnipeg on November 3, 1916, and settled in Saskatoon with his family in 1925. He earned his Bachelor of Commerce degree from McGill University, graduating with Great Distinction in 1936, and later served as an officer with the Canadian Army Service Corps. Credited with revitalizing Saskatoon's downtown area, Buckwold was the city's mayor from 1958 to 1963 and again from 1967 until 1971 when he was appointed to the Canadian Senate. He retired from the upper house in 1991 and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1995. Sidney Buckwold died on June 27, 2001.
